Houseplants are a beautiful way to spruce up your home with some natural greenery. However, unless you’ve been blessed with a natural green thumb, they can prove to be challenging to care for. Maintaining a houseplant requires a certain amount of responsibility and care. But with a little attention and love, your plants can thrive for years. Here are some tips to help you maintain your gardening nursery.
Routinely Water Your Houseplants
All houseplants have different watering requirements, depending on how they are grown and the season. Overwatering is the most common cause of houseplant death, so make sure you regulate how much water you give them. Check the top inch of soil every week, and only water if it feels dry.
Repot Overgrown Houseplants
It’s a gratifying feeling to see your indoor gardening nursery flourish. You may get to a point where your plants outgrow their current pots. Check the root system of your plants. If the roots are circling the inside of your container, it’s probably time to move them to a new home. Carefully remove the plant from its current container, and transport it to an appropriately sized pot. Replace the old soil with a fresh batch.
Keep Your Houseplants Pruned and Trimmed
You should always want your indoor gardening nursery to look neat and refreshed. That’s why it’s important to trim back any overgrown areas. Make sure to cut just above a set of buds to avoid side growth.
Manage Insects and Pests
Insects and pests can do major damage to your houseplant, and if left unchecked an infestation will ultimately kill a plant. Neem oil is a naturally occurring pesticide that has been used for hundreds of years to control pests and diseases. It works well as a preventative method as well as pest control for an existing infestation. Spray your plants weekly during the morning or evening–never during the day, as the combination of neem oil and direct sunlight can burn the plants.
